Most tips you find on the web focus on better insulation for your home, or installing
solar panels. While that is great advice, the average homeowner cannot afford the initial
investment for these tips. For the average home owner, these tips are worthless.

your electric bill each month regardless of how old/new your home is.
Further below, you will find some additional tips
which are specific to using energy more wisely while using laptop and desktop computers.

- Replace your traditional light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
- Unplug devices which charge (i.e. cell phone chargers) when they are not in-use
- Consider a Smart Power Strip and Power Usage Monitor to identify costly appliances in your home
- Contact your local utility company for an energy audit of your residence
- Install Programmable Thermostats
- Turn down your thermostat 1-2 degrees
- Turn down your hot water heater (just a little)
- Before you leave for work in the morning, open blinds or curtains for south-facing windows
- Determine the "Off-Peak" times for energy use in your area; run dish washer and clothes dryer during this time
- Turn off unessential outdoor lighting
- Eliminate window drafts with insulation tape
- Turn savings into a game for the whole family: Your electric bill will typically indicate your usage for the current
month and your usage for the same month last year. Turn energy savings into a game and see if, each month, you can get the usage lower
than it was for the same month last year.
